Tim Berne and OKO

OKO are an innovative Irish jazz outfit featuring Djackulate on turntables and alto saxophone, Shane Latimer on guitar, Darragh O'Kelly on keyboards and Shane O'Donovan on percussion. The group improvise on skeletal compositions, drawing on a wealth of influences such as krautrock, vintage TV shows, free jazz, noise, ambient, dub, drum ‘n’ bass, dubstep, hip-hop and more. According to The Irish Times “If you like your sonic fields wide and cerebral, then this is the band for you”. OKO perform at the RCC on Thursday March 10th in collaboration with US saxophonist Tim Berne. Recently ranked in the Top 10 of Time Out New York’s Essential NYC Jazz Icons, “Saxophonist and composer Tim Berne, the definitive genius of NYC’s downtown 1980s jazz scene, has remained committed to exploring the small group jazz idiom with a series of gritty, head-turning bands.”

Andy Sheppard

Andy Sheppard

The specially developed ‘Andy Sheppard with Shakespeare’s Songs’, featuring the UK’s No.1 sax player, which has received great acclaim everywhere it has been performed, comes to the RCC on Sunday 13th March. This phenomenal show has been described by The Guardian as “A completely enticing jazz-meets-Shakespeare show”. West Country saxophone colossus Andy Sheppard has composed over 350 works and collaborated with artists as varied as pianist Joanna MacGregor, songwriter John Martyn and a myriad of leading jazz figures, including Carla Bley and the late Gil Evans. ‘The great English poet of the saxophone’, jazz virtuoso Sheppard joins forces with drummer Christophe Marguet and pianist Guillaume de Chassy in a musical journey across Shakespeare’s world. Part-improvised and part-written, the music draws inspiration from Renaissance composers Thomas Morley and William Byrd, with the trio unfolding an extraordinary palette of sounds to conjure up everything from star-crossed lovers and brooding Danish princes to the rustling advance of Birnam Wood.
